SAFFRON CROCUS (SATIVUS)

Grow the world's most valuable spice!  Saffron is used in many dishes as a savoury spice.  and a small amount goes a long way to add great flavour to many dishes.  Fall blooming Crocus Sativus will produce pretty flowers of lavender blue.  The flowers themselves are short lived so it's important to harvest the Saffron threads as soon as the flowers open.   They will bloom about 8 weeks after planting the bulbs.  A perennial in growing zones 6-9 they require hot dry Summers.

      Growing saffron is a labour of love, but the reward of harvesting home-grown saffron threads makes it all worthwhile. Not only will you have a unique and valuable spice to use in the kitchen, but you’ll also enjoy the beauty of the crocus flowers in the garden.
