Delphinium Elatum sold as plant starts in 4" pots. With many beautiful and hardy varieties on offer from breeders in New Zealand, South America, England, the Netherlands and Scotland. Blues, pinks, whites, purples, as well as rare cultivars such as yellows. They come in singles, semi doubles and fully double florets. They love full sun with a bit of partial afternoon shade. These varieties are chosen for their longevity as a perennial, with strong stems, and intense colour. Excellent as cut flowers. Delphinium can be grown directly in the ground or in large pots and should not be allowed to dry out. They are heavy feeders so a good base of compost is essential for optimum performance. Those over 3 ft should be staked to protect against wind. These cold loving plants do well in zones 3 to 7 and will grow fine in zones 8 and 9 if they have shade protection from the hot Summer sun. Established roots can withstand -40 degrees C with no problem as long as they are planted in an area with excellent drainage. They hate wet feet. Blooming in June and July and if you cut the stems they will bloom again in the Fall. Not uncommon to see them blooming with frost on their petals. Hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators go crazy for them. The king of flowers, no others are as regal or as showy in the garden.
